Switched to DISH Network from DirecTV and Got $300

I’m writing this blog post to help others who are researching a switch from cable TV (such as Charter Communications, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox, or Bright House) to a satellite dish provider (such as DirecTV or DISH Network) for their television and entertainment needs. I recently switched from DirecTV to DISH and am thrilled with the change to DISH. While we really liked DirecTV, we didn’t realize that we were actually be billed more and receiving less. After being a Charter Communications customer for cable TV for 9 years, I decided to give DirecTV a try after having to call Charter ever few months to discuss 40% increases in my bill. I was with DirecTV from October 2013 through August 2016 and was very happy with their service overall, but some recent billing adjustments triggered me to research other options again.

In August of 2016, I researched switching back to Charter and called after receiving a recent promotional mailing. The agent said the only way to get the promotional pricing was for the service, but it would be extra for the equipment in order to use the service. Ludicrous. Then she tried to bundle phone service and a higher priced package and quoted me almost double what the mailing offered. Deceptive. Forget it.

I then decided to research DISH Network again. They have made some nice changes since I last looked at them in October of 2013. Their pricing is locked for 2 years! I remember a DirecTV promotion expiring after the first year and my bill increasing by $31/mo (different depending on the plan).

For a DISH vs. DirecTV comparison, I started with two lower-level packages that appear to be priced almost the same, and are realistic packages for my household. I am sharing my comparison below (research as of 8/8/16 – I’m not responsible for any changes):

I also saw the new DISH Network Flex Pack package, which starts with only about 50 channels for $29.99/mo, is great for our family since we don’t watch hundreds of channels. They refer to it as a “Skinny Bundle” and you can then add smaller channel packs (i.e. local, news, kids, etc.) for anywhere from $4 to $10 per pack. It is the a-la-carte type plan we’ve been wanting from a provider for years! Actually, I think it is billed at $39.99/mo with the first pack included. We chose the local pack. It is an extra $7/mo for extra receivers after the first. Here’s the breakdown of our bill:

Monthly Charges $63.99

  • Flex Pack w/ DVR (includes eAutoPay savings) $39.99
  • Locals Pack (first pack included) $0.00
  • Hopper 3 (Primary Receiver) $0.00
  • Joey (Second Receiver) $7.00
  • Joey (Third Receiver) $7.00

Of course, they have plenty of other great packages for those who want more than what we have! The pricing seems fairly comparable to DirecTV. The biggest difference that I saw is that DirecTV raises their prices by $31/mo after the first 12 months. Here are some of the other benefits that I discovered:

  • The new Hopper 3 HD DVR, able to record 2,000 hours and skip commercials
  • Two times more DVR storage space for recording shows – ability to record 16 channels at once (can’t say that will happen)
  • The ability to watch 100 percent of your live channels anywhere
  • The DISH Anywhere app so you can watch your live, recorded, and OnDemand shows on any device
  • The ability to directly access Netflix without changing inputs
  • Wireless Joey (smaller receiver used in rooms other than the living room with the Hopper 3) that allows you to easily bring the signal anywhere (we watch football games outside on the patio in the fall)
  • FREE installation (next day was available – with DirecTV I had to wait several weeks in my area)

Both DirecTV and DISH Network will offer free premium movie channels, such as HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz for the first 3 months. This is great with a DVR because you can just record a bunch of movies to watch later. I remember with DirecTV I had to call on the very last day to cancel. While not a big deal, DISH will let you call to cancel in advance so you don’t have to remember.

I searched and searched for a variety of other promotions and I found several. The one that I used provided for a $200 prepaid MasterCard. I also used a referral code from a friend to save another $100 off (increased from $50 through 10/27/16) of my bill for a total savings of $300!

Remember: If you don’t want to pay for the premium movie channels (free for 3 months) or the protection plan (free for 6 months) after the free offers end, make sure to call Dish at least two weeks before the free offers end. You will still get to use the channels/protection plan until the offer ends, but this prevents you from getting billed.
