Switched to DirecTV from Charter (cable) and Got $300
I’m writing this blog post to help others who are researching switching from cable TV (such as Charter Communications, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox, or Bright House) to a satellite dish provider (such as DirecTV or Dish Network) for their television and entertainment needs.
After being a Charter Communications customer for cable TV for the past 9 years, I decided to give DirecTV a try. This decision was not an easy decision, but I got tired of having to call Charter every few months to discuss the increases in my bill. I started to get very upset at them when they refused to reverse a late fee due to an expired credit card on file with their autopay. I reentered the new payment information on time, but didn’t see the fine print about it taking 45 days to update (what’s up with that?). Then, after coming off of a 2-year agreement, my bill went up 40%. When I called to ask about it, they said they could bring it down part of the way. When I checked online, they didn’t. I’ve tried the game where you threaten to cancel cable TV service for satellite and they transfer you a retention specialist for the best deal ever. This time, instead of calling once again to get the billing issue straightened out, I listened to a friend and looked into DirecTV.
I researched both DirecTV and Dish and ultimately selected DirecTV because of recommendations from friends who have it, initial pricing, and DirecTV’s new Genie whole-house DVR service. Sure, Dish has the Hopper, but the Genie sounds great. The whole NFL Sunday Ticket for free this season was not a big selling point for me. The free movie channels (HBO + STARZ + SHOWTIME + CINEMAX) for 3 months will be nice. We’ll have to set a bunch of movies to record on the Genie DVR, as we’ll discontinue those channels when the promotion expires.
I received a link from a friend offering a $100 referral bonus for each of us. This comes by way of a $10 bill credit for 10 months. That’s great, who doesn’t want to save money? Since I’ve maxxed out all of my referrals, here is my friend’s referral link: http://refer.directv.com/a/clk/1k0yhc
I searched and searched for a variety of other promotions and I found several – most would have amounted to an extra $5 per month for 12 months or a gift card for around $100. The morning that I was thinking of calling, I opened my mailbox and there was a Hallmark greeting card from DirecTV. It offered a free $200 VISA prepaid gift card – no promotion code or coupon code is needed. That sent me over the top. I called 1-855-567-1737 and was still able to give my neighbor’s account number for the $100 referral bill credit for each of us. I signed up for the “XTRA” package.
Here’s the catch (not really a big deal for me): if I would have signed up online using the link http://refer.directv.com/a/clk/1k0yhc it would have been $5 less per month for 12 months and free shipping on the equipment but then I wouldn’t have been able to get the $200 VISA gift card. So, it is really like a $113.45 bonus after the $60 online discount ($5/mo for 12 month) and $26.55 for equipment shipping.
I was skeptical, at first, about calling the 1-855-567-1737 number as I wanted to order online. I know there are a lot of DirecTV brokers out there and wasn’t sure if this was an official DirecTV number. The customer service rep gave me a confirmation number and an account number. I went to www.DirecTV.com and was able to login to my new account immediately. That confirmed that it was legit in my mind.
Here’s the info from the mailing I got. They didn’t ask for any sort of promo code, so you will be able to use it too:
“BEST OFFER EVER” - $200 BACK (VISA GIFT CARD)
- ENTERTAINMENT PACKAGE $29.99 for 12 months
- CHOICE PACKAGE $34.99 for 12 months
- EXTRA PACKAGE $39.99 for 12 months
- ULTIMATE PACKAGE $44.99 for 12 months
- FREE INSTALLATION
- FREE GENIE HD DVR UPGRADE
- FREE HBO + STARZ + SHOWTIME + CINEMAX (for 3 months)
- FREE 2013 NFL SUNDAY TICKET
DirecTV requires 24 month agreement (the price will go up after the 12 month promotional pricing expires).
For $200 Gift Card, Call 1-855-567-1737 (remember, you can’t sign up online for the $200 VISA gift card)
During sign up, please mention the friend referral and request the $100 bonus ($10/mo for 10 months). Since I’ve maxxed out all of my referrals, my friend’s account number is: 46961305 - my friend’s name is Lori Griffiths (they may wish to confirm that).
If you’d prefer to sign up online and get the $5 per month discount instead of the $200 VISA gift card, please use this link with my referral: http://refer.directv.com/a/clk/1k0yhc
